Prospero Año y Felicidad

When I was younger, New Year's meant having my best friend over, feasting on sweet treats and a ton of sparkling apple cider and staying up waaay past midnight. One year I was lucky enough to be put on the guest list of a swanky party at the very top of the Bank of America building in the city to watch my dad's band play the event. Then it became more of watching movies with my fam and toasting to the new year at midnight (I mean there were a few wild years during the college times, but nothing to worry the 'rents about). Last year, my mom, sister and I were so consumed with the movie we were watching - NO, I think we were actually reading! We were so consumed with the books we were reading (to be fair, I was reading The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo ) that when I glanced at the clock and 2012 was less than a minute away and we hadn't even popped the apple cider! My Name Is Nicky But You Can Call Me Dre

It’s still hard to believe that only one week has passed since I was nervously waiting with 57 other volunteers for our host families to arrive at the Peace Corps training center in Chaclacayo. I was so nervous that every Spanish word I knew seemed to leave my brain and when my host mom introduced herself I didn’t even remember to tell her my name! I don’t think my nerves will ever quit as most things seem to give me a certain level of anxiety but I can definitely feel myself getting more and more comfortable in the language, customs and happenings of Perú. Poco a poco as they say! I live with mi familia anfitriona (host family) in their small community named after the day it was founded, Tres de Octubre (luuuckily, we’ll get to help them celebrate the anniversary this year!). There are six volunteers total who live in Tres and one of them, a health volunteer named Nathan, actually lives in the same house as me.   Our household is made up of Nathan’s host mom, her three son...

Photos, As Promised

Image
Buenas, amigos! I’ve finally got some pictures for ya’ll, as promised. I feel like I’m still not taking as many as I should be (especially because I forgot to bring my camera on our Lima field trip last Saturday, LAME) but here’s a few for now. This is the training center in Chaclacayo where we spend a giant chunk of our time. We have classes in Spanish (and some Quechua starting week 5, I believe), Safety and Security, Peruvian Culture, and general training from 8am to 5pm, Monday thru Friday. This is LuLu. She lives at the training center and is my favorite pup in all of Peru! Mostly because the majority of pups around here are raggedy/sketchy street dogs who roam around and chase cars/joggers/each other. There are also a lot of roof dogs who are used kind of as a security system. Sometimes, for training, we’ll be assigned to a district and have to ask locals about their water system. The first week we all got rabies shots, just in case. YIKES. I was feel...
